With clinic, woman puts her faith into action: Lake Highlands: School nurse to open low-cost medical facility.

Aug. 28--Janna Gardner was a longtime company nurse, so joining an elementary school in 2004 was a learning experience. Within a few weeks at Stults Road Elementary School in Lake Highlands, Ms. Gardner learned that some students experience symptoms of hunger and malnutrition. Others claim illness to get attention. However, what really surprised her was that the most impoverished students often show signs of serious, untreated or undiagnosed illnesses, such as asthma or diabetes. And worse, they have no family doctor or insurance to ensure treatment.
Within months, Ms. Gardner's awareness evolved into a calling. Soon, her Healing Hands Ministry (www.hhmtx.org) will open a low-cost, faith-based medical clinic to serve the community. "I've lived in this neighborhood with my…
