Aug. 24--Police across the region say they aren't waiting for the start of classes Friday and Monday in public schools -- they will be watching school zones today for motorists who are speeding or breaking other laws.
Several area police departments, including Charlotte-Mecklenburg, are using various strategies to call attention to the upcoming start of the school year.
For private school students, classes already have begun this week.
The first day of school is Friday for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg and Union County systems. School begins Monday in Gaston County.
