Kruse International's Labor Day weekend collector car auction, held in conjunction with the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival, draws thousands of people to Auburn in northern Indiana every year. But Dean Kruse wants his hometown to become even more attractive to auto enthusiasts, so he is creating what he hopes will be a year-round automotive destination in the area.
On 300 acres just across from the auction grounds, the Dean V. Kruse Foundation and Museums are building a complex of motor-oriented attractions under the American Heritage Village banner. Already housed within the first big building are:
* World War II Victory Museum. This museum has an amazing collection of both Allied and Axis military vehicles.
* Kruse Automotive & Carriage Museum. The collection has everything from a stagecoach to Indy cars, along with the Batmobile, the A-Team van and Carl Casper's custom cars.
* James Dean Gallery. The Rebel Without a Cause's hometown is just south of Auburn; the gallery includes a replica of the Porsche Spyder in which Dean died.
* Philo T. Farnsworth Television History Center. Farnsworth was a teenager when he invented the way to transmit images electronically; this collection features early TV technology and lots of TV show memorabilia.
