Mayfield moves
Everyone knew Jeremy Mayfield was leaving Evernham Motorsports after this season, but in a move that caught some by surprise, Evernham fired Mayfield between the Indianapolis and Watkins Glen races. Former Evernham driver Bill Elliott drove the No. 19 Dodge at the Glen, but there is speculation Elliott Sadler (leaving Robert Yates Racing after this season) may get the ride within the next few races.
These are the possibilities as AutoWeek goes to press: If Sadler takes Mayfield's old ride immediately, Mayfield can replace Sadler in the Robert Yates No. 38 Ford-until part-time Busch driver David Gilliland moves up next month. (It's thought Stephen Leicht will succeed Dale Jarrett in the RYR No. 88 Ford next season.) Team owner Michael Waltrip says Mayfield won't drive for him next year, leaving Bill Davis Racing's new Toyota team as Mayfield's likely next stop.
