Google to sell Viacom videos, run clips on its ad network.
Google, perhaps weary of seeing MySpace and Apple succeed in the online video business while it sits still, has done a deal with content giant Viacom to distribute videos from Viacom's MTV Networks and Nickelodeon to hundreds of Web sites. Beginning this month as a test, Google will deliver about 100 hours of video clips from programs such as "SpongeBob Square Pants," "Laguna Beach" and MTV's Video Music Awards. They will run only on Web sites and blogs that belong to Google's Adsense advertising network.
The clips include short video ads that will run when a person clicks on the video to view it. Viacom, Google and the Web site owner that hosts the video will share revenues paid by advertisers, said Jennifer Feikin, director of video and multimedia search partnerships at Google. Viacom will get most of the revenue, according to Google executives.
