On September 27-29, 1993, the Central European Conference and Exhibitionntral for Academic Libraries and Informatics was held in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, with more than four hundred attendees.
The Lithuanian Librarians' Association jointed the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) in 1936 and participated in its activities until Lithuania was occupied by the USSR in 1940. For fifty years international contacts of Lithuanian librarians were severed. The Central European Conference and Exhibition for Academic Libraries and Informatics was the first international event in the history of the Baltic library community. Two hundred and ninety-two participants in the event were from Lithuania, twenty from Latvia, thirteen from Estonia, and seventy-six from other countries.
The idea for the conference and exhibition occurred to Lee G. Burchinal (U.S.). He proposed to hold the meeting as one of the means to promote a joint project of four Lithuanian academic libraries on implementing new technologies. Dal Lukas of the National Library of Medicine (U.S.) supported the …
