Aug. 22--The Federation Internationale de Natation World Masters Open Water Swimming Championships drew attention and created excitement at Robert Crown Memorial State Beach on Aug. 11. But the open water championships were just one event of the biennial FINA World Masters Swimming Championships that took place Aug. 3-17. All other events took place at Stanford's Avery Aquatic Complex, where Alameda swimmers acquitted themselves well. Most especially Ashley Jones. Jones, 75, the former Alameda High School swimming coach, took first place in three events for his age group and placed second in two others.
Jones set a meet record in the 75-79 men's 50-meter butterfly with a time of 36.06 seconds. He also placed first in the 400 individual medley (7:28.1) and 200 breaststroke (3:37.64).…
