Section: General News - Thai medical researchers have announced their discovery of a new strain of avian influenza virus in the latest outbreak in the country's northeastern province of Nakhon Phanom.

The result emerged from an epidemiological study to break the genetic code of bird flu virus strains collected from the latest outbreak -- Thailand's fourth -- in the provinces of Phichit and Nakhon Phanom.

Prof. Dr. Yong Poovorawan of Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Medicine announced the findings Wednesday on behalf of the Networking Committee of Laboratories and Bird Flu Prevention.
