CAPE TOWN, South Africa _ Wading into a life-and-death struggle, Sen. Barack Obama on Monday accused South African officials of refusing to face up to the AIDS epidemic ravaging their country and continent.
At a hospital overflowing with AIDS patients, Obama, D-Ill., declared that he will be tested for AIDS this week as an example to the millions of Africans who may be unknowingly spreading the disease.
Obama is being received with warmth and curiosity at the beginning of his two-week African journey, most effusively at a reception by former Anglican Church archbishop Desmond Tutu. While praising Obama for submitting to the AIDS test, the Nobel laureate sounded eager to hasten the freshman senator's career.
