From classic racers to modern muscle, fakes mean big bucks in the shadowy world of special cars
Don Silawsky was stunned when his pride and joy, 1966 Ford GT40, Chassis No. 1040, appeared in a catalog offering it for sale at a June auction in Paris.
That's because Silawsky, who did a six-month stint on an Arctic Ocean research station in 1970 to raise money to buy his first sports car, is quite certain he owns the one and only Ford GT40, Chassis No. 1040. And as far as he knows, the car he bought for $50,000 in 1978 sits disassembled and in storage, awaiting a planned restoration.
