MORRISON: An automatic trans-equipped Mazda Miat... er, MX-5 (what a stupid name) defeats the purpose, doesn't it? What self- respecting sports car enthusiast would buy such a thing? I can understand it only if a physical limitation prevents you from operating a conventional manual. Otherwise, just buy a minivan and be done with it, leaving the real driving to people who respect it enough to take the time to learn to do it properly. And anyone reading this who is contemplating spending $1,100 on the automatic option, just send the money to me. I guarantee I'll have more fun with the cash than you will if you blow it on this transmission.
That said, the automatic works okay, and the car is still fun to drive, but nowhere near as much as the manual version. I also roll my eyes at how every automotive engineer seems to feel it's necessary to reinvent the wheel: What's with the redundant shift paddles? Both sides of the steering wheel have the same paddle setup, pull for upshifts, push for downshifts. How about the right paddle shifts up, the left down? If it works for most F1 drivers, I'm sure it's just fine for the goofballs who buy an automatic Miat... er, MX-5. Did I mention that's a stupid name?
MANDEL: Took the Miata-it will always be Miata to me-for what was one of the finest Michigan summer weekends. Of course it peeved my wife: She wants me to bring home large vehicles I can haul stuff with; me, I just want to haul myself around in something fun.
