I am 60 years old and suffer from vaginal dryness. Three months ago I couldn't sleep at night from the discomfort. Intercourse is very painful. My mother and three of her sisters died from breast cancer, so I do not want to take hormones. I found a product called Replens, which was supposed to be used every other day. But it was not effective, so I started using it every day. It helped, but I am concerned about using it daily. Do you have any suggestions?
Many postmenopausal women (even those on hormones) suffer from vaginal dryness. You can safely use vaginal moisturizers such as KY Liquid or Vagisil Intimate Lubricant every day. They are designed to attract moisture to dry vaginal tissues and relieve irritation; often a few drops will provide relief. Other lubricants designed for use during sexual activity include Astroglide, which has a longer-lasting consistency. All of these products are water-based and contain glycerin and other ingredients in a base that has an acidic pH to prevent vaginal infections. Replens contains pilocarpine, which adheres to vaginal tissues, artificially thickening them to relieve dryness. It is not designed for daily use. The only way to reverse the vaginal atrophy that causes dryness is estrogen therapy. Because of your family history, you may want to talk to your doctor about using estrogen cream or the vaginal tablet (Vagifem). Studies have found only minute amounts of estrogen (if any) enter the blood stream from local therapies.
