Aug. 13--The Burke County Public Schools are moving closer to fixing the structurally unsound home-side bleachers at Freedom High School, which have been closed at least in part for nearly a year. The seats were built about 30 years ago by pouring concrete on a level surface. But over time, water seeped in through cracks and crevices, washing away some of the ground below and leaving parts of the bleachers unsupported. The eroded soil left voids ranging from a half-inch to 6 feet beneath the seats, Associate Superintendent Randall Brackett said.
