In your July 17 Drivers Log on the VW Phaeton W12, you speculate a $100,000 VW must appeal to now-wealthy former Beetle owners who want to relive their past. There is no shortage of wealthy, former Beetle owners; Phaeton sales should be remarkable, but they aren't. If Phaetons achieved at least 30 mpg and were marketed as "green'' executive sedans, they'd be sold out.

Two AW writers love the Phaeton, though one of them calls it "stupid'' and the other says VW is selling a "Cadillac-badged Chevy.'' I disagree. The Phaeton is mostly a VW-badged Bentley. I was in Dresden and watched Phaetons and Flying Spurs being built on the same production line. The mechanical difference between the two beneath the skin is minimal except for the twin turbos on the Bentley engine. Indeed the Phaeton is a People's car-for people who want a Bentley at a $70,000 discount.
