Aug. 9--Even though West Nile virus cases are dwindling across the country, the Fort Wayne-Allen County Department of Health's campaign against mosquitoes is still worth the $94,000 budgeted for it this year. This is the fifth year that West Nile has been at the heart of local concern about mosquitoes, and there's not much controversy about mosquito control these days. It hasn't always been that way. In 2002, when West Nile virus showed up in people in Allen County for the first time, going all-out against mosquitoes faced much stronger opposition from the public.
