Aug. 9--LAMAR - Mosquitoes in Prowers County have tested positive for West Nile virus for the first time this year, a sign that human infections could be next.
County officials confirmed Tuesday that mosquitoes collected in test pools in and around Lamar tested positive for West Nile virus, a pathogen that is typically transmitted via mosquito bite.
Southeastern Land and Environment, an agency of Prowers County, is urging people to avoid contact with mosquitoes, but says no human cases of West Nile have been reported this year in the county.
