Groups collect supplies, help prepare children for school.

Aug. 5--Smiles are the only thanks required, according to a woman whose Chattanooga organization has donated more than 25,000 backpacks filled with school supplies to needy schoolchildren over the last five years.
"It's magical to see on their faces how appreciative and loving they feel that you're giving them something," said Beth Trussell, executive director of the Nehemiah Project. The organization is one of several area ministries, churches or church classes that have planned projects to help parents provide their children with the things they need to start school. Volunteers with the Nehemiah Project will deliver 3,500 backpacks for every child in seven schools on Aug. 17. The backpacks were assembled and packed by volunteers in late July at City Church, Metropolitan Tabernacle, Central Baptist Church and Mount Canaan Baptist Church.
