When enslaved Africans were forcefully brought to the United States and the Caribbean, they still carried their cultures and customs within themselves. One important custom they passed down from generation to generation was the oral tradition. The oral, or spoken, tradition has many categories, including legends, myths, oratories, songs, and tales. Some of the most popular oral tales are the trickster tales. Many of these tell of a hare (rabbit), mouse, spider, tortoise, or other small animal and its attempts to outwit a larger animal such as a bear, elephant, fox, or wolf.
