Aug. 3--The Excel Academy Charter School welcomed visitors Friday for a ribbon-cutting ceremony and an open house. The school for children in grades K-5, at 6001 NW Eighth Ave., is managed by the Excel Group which is spearheaded by Valerie Kinnon, its founder and CEO. "We were just concerned community people," Kinnon said, "and we decided that perhaps we needed to do something more innovative and creative."
