NIBONG TEBAL: Forty-six people left Ipoh in a bus at the break of dawn yesterday in a pilgrimage to the annual St Anne's Feast in Bukit Mertajam.

Hardly 90 minutes later, and approaching the last stretch of their journey on the North-South Expressway, the bus crashed, killing 11 of them and injuring the rest.

The accident, one of the worst ever on the highway, is believed to have happened after the bus driver negotiated a gentle bend near Km160.8, just after the Jawi toll plaza at 6.45am.
