New interim rule on electronic I-9 is in effect.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has issued an interim rule amending the regulations on Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification Form. The new rule [BICE 2345-05; DHS 2005-0046] is effective June 15, 2006, and implements statutory changes in the Form I-9 retention requirements [P.L. 108-390, signed December 2004].

I-9 basics. All U.S. employers (and outside paid referrers and recruiters) are required to verify on a Form I-9 the identity and employment eligibility of all employees (U.S. citizens or not) hired to work in the United States.
