Jul. 30--Gaston school officials describe it as an "all-or-nothing" model for rating schools. The No Child Left Behind Act, which began in 2002, is a federal law designed to measure the performance of all groups of students at a particular school. And while Gaston County Schools Superintendent Reeves McGlohon says "it is simply an unfair measure," he also says that Gaston County's results are not where they should be. Sixty-two percent of Gaston County Schools made AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) in 2005-06, according to results released last week. The same number of schools, 33 out of 53, met AYP standards in 2004-05. McGlohon said he has mixed emotions about the district's results.
