Jul. 26--You won't find big-city pollsters gauging the Republican primary race for Leavenworth County Commission's first district seat. But the candidates are hoping voters don't underestimate the importance of their vote. For those who don't think their vote matters, consider that Incumbent Donald Navinsky's margin of victory in the last go-round for first district was about 3 percent. The race pitted Navinsky, who did not seek re-election, against James C. "J.C." Tellefson. Now Tellefson is taking on Sam Maxwell III to earn the Republican spot in the general election. The winner will face Democrat Edward T. Sass in November. If time provides any insight, expect the Maxwell versus Tellefson race to be close yet again. A look at the candidates:
Maxwell Maxwell said his reason for running is a strong belief in public service. "I just feel that I need to give back to the county that I love," he said. Maxwell, a longtime local businessman, ran an unsuccessful bid for Leavenworth City Commission in 2005. Though he hasn't held elected office, he's hardly new to the county…
