Jul. 23--CONCORD -- As a longtime principal in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, Carl Flamer was an open book. He had to be available and upfront with students, parents and the community. Over 13 years at First Ward Elementary School in uptown Charlotte, he forged partnerships with businesses and organizations. That ability should serve him well in his current job. Flamer, 53, is the new president of Barber-Scotia College. It's a challenging position for someone who thought he was easing into retirement two years ago. And he agreed to take the job on a volunteer basis. Already last week, his desktop calendar was full for the rest of July, with notes on meetings, appointments and things to do crowded into each daily box. Tops on his "to-do" list: Regaining accreditation for Barber-Scotia, raising money, recruiting students and building critical partnerships within the community.
