Jul. 22--Catawba County hit the bull's-eye Friday. City of Newton and county officials approved agreements that will bring a massive Target Corp. distribution center to a 247-acre tract off U.S. 321 and N.C. 10 southwest of Newton, creating at least 500 new jobs and an estimated $100 million investment. Incentives worth $3.3 million will pave the way for Minneapolis-based Target to construct a 1.5-million-square-foot building beginning next spring. At the size of roughly 27 football fields, the Newton operation will be the largest distribution center in the Charlotte region, according to the Charlotte Regional Partnership, an economic development group that represents 16 counties.
