Jul. 21--A massive Target distribution center is coming to rural southwestern Catawba County, bringing at least 500 new jobs and an estimated $100 million in investment. City of Newton and county officials approved incentive agreements for the project at a meeting this morning. That paves the way for Minneapolis-based Target, the nation's number-two discount retailer, to construct a 1.5-million-square building, beginning next spring. The distribution center off U.S. 321 should begin operating about 18 months later and will serve the mid-Atlantic region, Catawba County Economic Development Corp. President Scott Millar said.
