The World Rally Championship this year is literally a season of two halves. For the first time in the sport's history there is a two-month summer break-and this coincides with the final test session for championship leader Sebastien Loeb's aging Citroen Xsara WRC.
The season's first half saw Loeb take five wins from eight rallies for a 29-point advantage, but now that development on the Xsara is frozen, Loeb faces a struggle.
"I said from the start I had to take wins while I could,'' Loeb said. "The Xsara is good but old-there is nothing more we can do to it now and if you stand still, you go backward. From now on it will be a very close fight for the title.''
Loeb's closest challenger (and the only other rally winner) has been Marcus Gronholm in the new Ford Focus WRC, with three victories. Were it not for some teething troubles, that total could have been higher. But Gronholm knows he still has a chance for the title if he can beat Loeb consistently. ...
