1. Grand Prix! Rare Images of the First 100 Years by Quentin Spurring, hardbound, 240 pages, David Bull Publishing, $49.95 bullpublishing.com
Spurring, a motorsports contributor to AutoWeek, writes captions for the 241 fascinating photographs as if he were there, throughout the century, in person. Besides explaining action in the photos, Spurring includes back stories to put the drama in perspective. He does narratives, too, from the first international car race given the title "Grand Prix'' (1906) and ending with Fernando Alonso's world championship title.

1950s amateur racer/now racing writer Art Evans evokes a California racetrack that lasted only seven races in 1956-57 due to two deaths and a serious-injury crash at the seventh event. The book is in scrapbook style. Race programs are reproduced, as are some 300 photos, plus maps, details of movies filmed at Paramount Ranch and remembrances from drivers. Bob Bondurant said, "Even today it would be a fantastic circuit.''
