Jul. 19--Holly Springs is set to become a proving ground -- for Novartis and the next generation of vaccines. The plant the Swiss drug maker is proposing to build in the booming bedroom community southwest of Raleigh will manufacture flu vaccines with a new technique that could produce vaccines faster in case of a pandemic. The plant could be the first of its kind. It's also a first for Novartis, which is Europe's third-largest drug maker and better known for brand-name drugs such as cancer treatment Gleevec, generic drugs including Prilosec to relieve heartburn, Ciba Vision contact lenses and Gerber baby food.
