The imprisonment of Alaa Abdel Fateh, the Egyptian blogger, set in motion a flurry of online activity. Activists drew upon a grab bag of technologies--flash animation, online petitions, video blogs and a special "wiki" collaborative Web site--to organize themselves and attract attention. Their defense of the editor of Bit Bucket (manalaa.net ) showed just how effective blogs can be in circumventing government controls over the press in the Middle East--Al Fateh was released after 45 days.
