ORLANDO, Fla. _ It's July 18. On this day in history, Nelson Mandela was born (1918). Gymnast Nadia Comaneci scored a perfect 10 in the Olympics (1976).

And in Rome, a great fire that destroyed the city broke out (64 AD). Legend has it that the Orlando Magic fiddled while watching it burn.

Actually, that was Nero. But no Orlando Magic fan will forget _ and some never will forgive _ what happened 10 years ago:

It was the day the Magic lost Shaquille O'Neal to the Los Angeles Lakers _ and the day Orlando lost its basketball identity.

On July 18, 1996, O'Neal, an unrestricted free agent, signed a contract with the Lakers.

The Magic still are recovering from what has been called the greatest free-agent loss in sports history.
