Jul. 16--Despite high temperatures Saturday, efforts to control the Canyon Fire in Stanislaus County proceeded mostly according to plan. Containment was expected by 5 p.m. today, a day later than fire officials had originally anticipated. Del Puerto Canyon Road was reopened Saturday morning, the first time traffic was allowed through the county road since fire broke out a week ago. The fire was 75 percent contained as of 8 p.m. Saturday.

After fighting the fire that had burned 31,933 acres and 13 buildings as of Saturday, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection crews were lighting small fires themselves. CDF spokesman Henry Dekruyff said burning…
