Jul. 16--They claimed to be having a good time, but Bill and Gwen Fox and friend Don Jenkins were working up a sweat in the hot July sun.

It was nearing noon, and those in the group were picking up dead tree limbs and raking mulch into piles in front of Coulwood Middle School in northwest Charlotte. "We actually volunteered for this duty," Bill Fox said, putting a rake down momentarily and wiping the sweat that streamed down his forehead. "We have no excuses. We knew what we were getting into."
