The last word we heard out of Stuttgart on plans to bring the Smart brand to the United States ("Stuttgart Scuttlebutt,'' Dec. 5, 2005) seemed both plausible and far-fetched. At that time our sources were saying Smart would come to the States in 2007 and be sold and serviced through Roger Penske's United Auto Group.
Now DaimlerChrysler has made it official: The successor to the two-seat Smart minicar will arrive in the States in 2008 in three model configurations and be sold through United Auto Group.
Initial rollout of retail outlets-not all will necessarily be UAG stores-is expected to start in mid-2007, with the official launch of the brand planned for later in the year and sales starting in early 2008.
Here's some extra skinny: The car shown in this spy photo is likely the next ForTwo. We hear this car will make its world premiere at the Geneva motor show next spring and will be the car we'll get in the United States.
