About 2 million Asians have been infected with HIV, and Asia is expected to suffer the fastest spread of the infection in coming years, a World Health Organization (WHO) official said.
The world total for people infected with the virus now is 10 million, George Loth, WHO representative in Jakarta, Indonesia, told a news conference.
"WHO expects the annual incidence of new HIV infections in Asia to exceed any other continent by 1995 -1996, making Asia the center of the AIDS epidemic," he said.
Quoting a WHO report, he said that by the year 2000, the number of people in Asia infected with HIV will jump to more than 10 million. …
