Jul. 7--Consumers' interest in buying furniture fell sharply in April, with orders dropping 13 percent compared with a year ago, according to a survey.

The value of furniture orders was $1.9 billion in April compared with $2.2 billion in April 2005, according to the survey by BDO Seidman LLP, a financial-services company with an office in High Point. Nearly 80 percent of residential manufacturers reported a decline in orders during April.

Ken Smith, the director of furniture services for BDO Seidman, said yesterday that it was the biggest year-to-year decline in orders in three years.
