2007 Mercedes-Benz GL450

RAYNAL: The GL is beautifully built and good-looking, but it drives big. That is to say it's soft and tends to wallow, more so than our long-term Chevrolet Suburban that I had over the weekend; at least it felt like that to me. That's good over the rough pavement around here-you don't feel a thing.
There is good power from the silky V8, and the seven-speed automatic couldn't be smoother. One thing that bugged me, or at least took some getting used to, was the brake pedal, which has a ton of travel before things start whoa-ing.
Whether you like the GL or not, I'm sure Mercedes thinks it's a good idea from the standpoint that its two main rivals, Audi and BMW, don't offer such a vehicle. Audi's Q7 is more in line with the ML as is BMW's X5, so Benz beat 'em both to market with a big ute.
Solid and comfortable and easy to drive: Just as one expects from Benz.
FLORADAY: I agree with Wes. This is exactly what I expected a Benz SUV to be: luxurious, quiet, comfortable and no slouch off the line.
