Jul. 7--So much for slow starts.

The Carolina Junior Volleyball Slam defeated Coast Volleyball Club of San Diego 27-25, 25-22 to win the USA Volleyball Junior Olympics 18-under national title in Atlanta on Wednesday. It was the first time a club team from North Carolina won a national championship.

The Slam went 9-3 in the 48-team bracket, after an 0-2 start.

"They're all seniors, and it was their last tournament together, so everyone got sentimental early," assistant coach Rick Kiser said. "It was a matter of getting their focus back. After that start, we had to win just about every match."
