Digital Universe fails Big Bang test
' site review
The Digital Universe project has set itself an interstellar ambition -- to produce a web resource that is accepted by teachers, academics and librarians as a credible source of information. This ambition is to be applauded.
The web and free resources such as Wikipedia have, as yet, failed to achieve the credibility of printed reference works, but first glimpses of Digital Universe show that the execution of this ambition can be difficult to achieve.
Digital Universe is the brainchild of three entrepreneurs: Joseph Firmage, a former IT business leader; Bernard Haisch, an astrophysicist; and Larry Sanger, a former director of Wikipedia. The trio is attempting to build a portal of portals to the world's knowledge.
To enter the Digital Universe, users must download a special browser known as ManyOne. Downloading the browser takes at least half an hour with a fast network, so it's advisable to set some time aside and have a book at hand.
