Jul. 4--Not everything involved in growing a small business is within the owner's control, as four local businesses have learned in recent months. All four businesses we've been following through their first year are still open -- some with soaring success, others with difficulty and even agony. Despite the ups and downs, all the owners continue to pursue their dreams. These updates will focus on the businesses themselves and not small business issues, so Susan Miller will take a break once a quarter from her column. We'll update the progress of these businesses again the first week of October.

Founder: Bardie Brady Established: August 2005 Type of business: Nonprofit foundation/support group for children with autism and their families Number of employees: Three teachers, four teachers' assistants Start-up costs: Estimated $225,000 by year's end Year-end goal: To raise a targeted amount to allow the fund to support up to 19 children and their families Hours: Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. with after school program from 3-6 p.m. Bridges Learning Center received a bonanza of donations in the months since the facility officially opened April 17, but more still are needed to expand its services.
