Fukuda 'considering' to run in LDP poll
Former Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuo Fukuda on Friday told lawmakers he would consider running in the Liberal Democratic Party presidential race in September after assessing the level of support for him in the party and other factors, according to sources.
Although Fukuda had implicitly expressed his interest in running, he had not previously expressed clear intention to make a bid for the leadership.
His recent comment to lawmakers paves the way for a presidential run, the sources said.
Fukuda met former Defense Agency Director General Seishiro Eto on Thursday at the Diet Building and told him, "Let's carefully examine the situation."
