Jul. 1--Khadijah Ghafur, superintendent and board president of the now-closed GateWay Academy charter school system, was convicted Friday of misusing public funds and stealing taxpayer money in a case that gained attention because Ghafur claimed it was spurred by backlash after the Sept. 11 attacks. Some of GateWay's leaders are black and Muslim. In addition to five counts each of misappropriation of public funds and grand theft by embezzlement, Ghafur also was convicted of one count each of theft by false pretenses from bondholders, failing to file a tax return in 2000 and filing a false tax return in 2001.
