Sussex helps dent Oxbridge citation league dominance

Oxbridge dominates the scientific citation league in the UK, according to a ranking by Thomson Scientific's Science Watch of 150 universities.

UK institutions are ranked by total number of citations, as well as average number of citations per paper, a figure described as "impact". The league tables cover the period 2001 to 2005.

Based on total citations, the University of Cambridge ranks first in 10 of the 21 fields analysed. However, Sussex features highly in the impact ranking. This ranking removes the advantage of large institutions that simply publish more papers, and allows smaller institutions to show relative performance levels.
