NAME: "Campeche" (cam-PAY-chay) derives from the name of the former Maya trading town of Ah-Kin-Pech. Close to where the Maya repulsed the initial attempt to conquer the peninsula, it later became the stronghold of the Spanish colonists in the Yucatan.
LOCATION: In the southeastern corner of the Yucatan Peninsula, bordering Quintana Roo and Yucatan states to the north and east; Guatemala and the Mexican state of Tabasco to the south; and the Gulf of Mexico to the west.
CAPITAL: Campeche City.
MAJOR CITIES: Campeche City, Ciudad del Carmen, Escarcega, Champoton, Calkini and Hopelchen.
MAJOR INDUSTRIES: Oil and commercial fishing.
