New Braunfels.(Central Texas & Hill Country)
German farmers and craftsmen by the thousands immigrated to Texas in the mid-1800s, many of them starting towns in a broad swath of fertile land in central Texas. Among the early immigrants in the 1840s, Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels brought 6,000 of his countrymen to settle an area with cool, clear spring-fed rivers shaded by trees. They called their town New Braunfels, and more than a century-and-a-half later, visitors are still greeted with "willkommen," bakeries that make kolaches, biergartens with oompah music and an annual Wurstfest reminiscent of Germany's Oktoberfest.
