By Rail: The major cities of Baden-Wurttemberg are easily reached by rail from other centers in Germany. Trains run at least hourly from Munich to Stuttgart (two hours, 20 minutes). Frankfurt am Main can be reached in 90 minutes on at least two trains each hour. At least three trains per hour connect Frankfurt and Heidelberg in less than an hour. Trains run between Frankfurt and Basel hourly as well, stopping in Karlsruhe after an hour, and an hour later in Freiburg.
By Road: Although most parts of Baden-Wurttemberg can be reached by train, it is easier to see the beautiful countryside by car. Major Autobahns cross through the state and allow for fast connections. The A5 runs parallel to the Rhine from Switzerland past Freiburg, Baden-Baden, Karlsruhe, Heidelberg, Frankfurt and beyond. The A8 runs from Karlsruhe to Munich via Stuttgart and Ulm.
In rural areas, roads are much more scenic and, although generally in good condition, the going can be much slower. Do not expect to do much more than 60 km/h (36 mph) on most Black Forest roads, even during the quiet season.
By Air: Stuttgart Airport, [telephone] 0711-9480, www.stuttgart-airport.de, is the largest in the state. It has connections to domestic and European destinations. S-Bahn lines S2 and S3 connect every 10 to 20 minutes to the Hauptbahnhof in under 30 minutes.
