In the early 19th century, Napoleon redrew the map of Germany and combined several small states to create the Grand Duchy of Baden and the Kingdom of Wurttemberg as part of his plan to reduce the number of independent political entities in Germany. Opportunistic coalition switching by both allowed them to keep the newly added territories.
