During California's Mission Era, the harbor in Capistrano Bay provided a safe spot for the sailing vessels that came to trade with the padres at Mission San Juan Capistrano. In 1835, the square-rigger Pilgrim carried a young sailor named Richard Henry Dana, who wrote about his voyages in his book Two Years Before the Mast. Dana had little to say that was good about most of California, but he called Capistrano Bay "the only romantic spot on the coast."
With its cliffs, coves, beaches, and harbor, this boating community has lived up to its potential as a fine resort destination. Dana spent only two days at Capistrano Bay, yet the point was named for him in the 1880s, and the town bears his name. At Dana Wharf, you can rent a powerboat or sailboat and explore the harbor. Or take a deep-sea fishing trip at twilight. The fishing fleet offers lots of opportunities for full or half-day fishing. One of the best places for a swim and picnic is Doheny State Beach, [telephone] (714) 496-6172, situated at the outlet of San Juan Creek. They have grassy lawns, plenty of picnic tables and barbecue grills at the western end, plus a mile of gorgeous sand beach. This park was the setting for the beach picnic interview that started this book.
The rocky western end is great for diving and fishing, as well as tide pooling. The eastern end, with fire pits and beach showers, is a great place to have a beach party for two, an evening campfire, and a kiss by starlight. The park, located at 25300 Dana Harbor Drive, covers 62 acres. You'll find flush toilets at the western end, and chemical toilets at the eastern end. They also have camping, and a visitor center with five aquariums.
