This may not be the first community that springs to mind when you think of romantic getaways, but wait until you hear what awaits you.

Bakersfield started off romantically enough with the discovery of gold in 1851 in the Kern River Valley. But it was black gold that made the town famous. Oil was discovered in 1865, and the Bakersfield area remains one of the nation's top oil-producing areas.
