During a May 16 campaign rally in Guamuchil, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the socialist candidate for the presidency of Mexico, denounced incumbent Vicente Fox for acting as a "puppet, a plaything of foreign governments." In the same populist vein, Obrador lamented the Mexican government's use of illegal immigration as a way of exporting its unemployed population to the United States.
"It is not the solution," declared Obrador. "It is not an alternative but it is a disgrace for us Mexicans because of the irresponsible rulers of this country."
